For the first time ever, a Saturn will pace the Showroom Stock C field to the start of SCCA's National Runoffs. Today's final qualifying session, saw the #16 Panasonic Saturn catching a bump draft from Honda pilot Kenny Payson, to set a new Mid-Ohio Pro-Course record for our class at 75.146 miles per hour around the 2.258 mile 14-turn race track. ThunderSport Racing is ahead of Dodge's John Fernandez by less than 2/100's of a second. The top 10 cars are within a second of us. Hondas, Mazdas, and Neons -- a fast and tight field indeed. They will lead the 40-car SSC swarm to the green flag at 10:55 am.
Tommy Brandlehner's tire management may have made the difference today. He adjusted pressures on our Kumhos to fit the cool early morning conditions and the car worked the way he wanted it to. I'm glad it did, it was a rocket!
Mid-Ohio's weather is deteriorating. We're looking for showers overnight and a possible wet track for tomorrow's 20-lap sprint. Saturns love the wet. Bring it on Isabel! |
